uk speed camera

With over 7,000 cameras on the roads of the UK today, and more to come, there is little or no chance that this particular addition to our roads is going to go away any time soon, so we will all continue to hear the horror stories of three tickets in one day, fines over 200 quid and the rest, but there are a few really good systems available to alert drivers to the locations of the UK speed camera. Here is a broad overview of what these systems can do and how they can help motorists.

UK speed cameras fall into two broad groups, static and mobile, with different types of cameras available in both areas - photo camera systems, radar/laser systems and video systems. Of the two groups, the static cameras are most easily found and avoided as their locations are readily available from numerous sites on the Internet and these locations are available for uploading to the majority if not all of the GPS navigation based systems available for purchase in every high street.

More affordable than other systems, they do still give a good deal of information to the user apart from the camera locations, such as speed limit in that area, your current speed, etc., allowing the driver to change their driving habits in that stretch of road. If used properly this will do away with a majority of camera traps and so avoid that ticket. UK speed camera mobile systems, however, are a totally different story.

Mobile systems are exactly that – able to move, so there is no specific location attached to the camera. However, with radar detectors and diffusers available, with these devices giving you (usually) both a visual and audio warning of camera systems, when detected by your device should, again, enable you to alter your driving while in range to escape that ticket. With that being said, government is currently trying to have all detectors banned from sales, or at the least forcing motorists to disable that ability from their units. It may yet be a while before being made law, but prepare for it now.

So, to avoid being caught by a UK speed camera system, go out and spend a couple of pounds on a good navigation system or detector. Main points to be aware of when buying is how often listed locations are updated, how you can update them, how easy (if you decide on a detector system) to disable that part of the software that runs the detector, ease of transfer to other vehicles and things like that. They are all pretty similar, but each person has their own tastes and so you really have to pick one that suits you best. Remember, driving at the limit is the cheapest way to avoid all these problems.
