It’s very possible that you will see a speed camera along a roadway as you are driving along.  These cameras can be seen cropping up along roadways everywhere and this is creating a lot of controversy.  Many people feel that using a speed camera is not a good idea, but before you make up your mind, you might want to learn a little bit about how they work, why they are used and where they are installed.  It is also interesting to discover what technological advances are in store for the cameras.

The main thing that people should realize is that a speed camera will likely be installed in places that officials have concerns about.  If there is an area that is plagued with a high volume of accidents it is likely that a speed camera will be installed.  This is especially true if the accidents were caused by excessive speed.  Lastly, if there are areas of the road that make it tough for police officers to get to monitor then officials might think about placing a speed camera there as well.  The main goal of a speed camera is to increase the safety of roadways for all motorists that use them.  Speeding can be very dangerous and officials will do anything possible to get people to slow down.

Just how does a speed camera work?  Its basic function is to snap a picture of a vehicle that is speeding.  As a car speeds past one of the cameras, the device quickly checks its speed by sending electromagnetic waves to the passing vehicle.  Once those waves return it can use the data to determine the cars speed.  If the car is travelling faster than what the device has been set to accept it will date a digital image of the car.  Next, the image is encrypted using an internet connection and sent to the central processing center.  The encrypted image is evaluated so the registration information can be retrieved and the infraction is logged.  Officials then do a check in order to determine if the car is a rental or has been reported stolen.  If the vehicle clears the check, then a citation is mailed t the owner.

There are a number of areas that are currently being worked on to further develop the technologies of a speed camera.  Work is being done to develop the cameras ability to measure the distance between two cars.  The purpose of this would be to reduce the tailgating infractions that commonly occur.  Also under development is the technology that will allow cameras to determine if turn signals are being used when necessary.  As the cameras technology is advanced it is likely that more tickets will be issued.  It is likely that the citation process will be very similar to that of speeding citations.
