Why Speed Camera Detectors are Necessary

Why Speed Camera Detectors are Necessary

As a citizen of the UK, you may be appalled at the growing number of speed cameras being set up on your roads.  Aside from the nervous sensation of having someone watch your every move, there is also the chance that if you make a simple mistake you may pay for it with a hefty fine or points off of your license.  Certainly not worth arriving at your destination five minute earlier!

Aside from that, there is the apprehension of many in the UK about the need for speed cameras and what they are really meant to do.  After all, speed cameras make it very easy for the government to automatically generate revenue from the populace without much overhead.  They don’t have to pay officers to monitor traffic, and they can do everything electronically with very little effort.  That, my friends, is a scary thought! Of course, the primary excuse is that they are making the roads safer for us all!

On the other hand, with less officers monitoring for speeders, they can move on to more important things like drug control and keeping murderers off of the streets.  And the government does publically post where these speed cameras are located.  There really isn’t a reason you should be caught speeding.  But you can’t think of everything and you certainly cannot know where speed cameras are in unfamiliar areas.  That is why speed camera detectors are necessary.

Not only can speed camera detectors protect you from hefty police fines, but they could very well keep you safer on the road.  Data points to the notion that those who carry speed camera detectors are more likely to be aware of their speed and less likely to be involved in an accident.  That’s pretty amazing when you think about it, because normally you think of someone who owns a speed camera detector to be the type of person who speeds all of the time!

Before we talk about the types of necessary speed camera detectors, let’s talk about the speed camera itself.  There are several types of speed cameras in the government’s arsenal.  There are speed cameras that can determine your speed based on “loops” that lay across the road.  When a vehicle crosses the loops, the rate of speed can be determined and the speed camera will take a picture of the offending vehicle.

Another type will actually take two pictures of a passing vehicle—one picture at one spot in the road and another picture further down the road—and use the time and date stamp on the pictures to determine the rate of speed.  However, the most commonly used are also the most familiar to the general public.  These are radar devices that shoot a burst of radar or laser at the vehicle.  The return laser or radar burst tells the speed camera how fast the vehicle was going.  And furthermore, the laser detectors are also the most commonly used for police officers in the field, which make it impossible to narrow down where the next speed trap will be.

For the common person like me and you, speed camera detectors are necessary because they are a perfectly legal way to fight back against the over-watchful eye of the government.  You can use speed detectors as single units or buy combined units that utilize GPS and database information to let you know whenever you are near a speed camera.  Others detect the radar type speed cameras, and the best ones are the speed camera detectors that are a combination of all those features.

Soon, you will be able to incorporate this all into one small mobile device that will be your navigation system, phone, personal computer and your speed camera detector.  But how do these detectors function?

It really is a wonderful thing.  Imagine driving down the highway when a voice comes out of your speed camera detector and says that there is a speed camera several meters ahead.  Without even taking your eyes off the road, you can start to slow down in plenty of time to avoid a ticket.  Combined with a navigation device, you can determine road conditions and be alerted when there are changes in speed zones due to construction or an accident.  Even if you aren’t near a speed camera, your device knows the speed limit of the road you are on and will warn you when you’ve gone over.

This all sounds promising, and it isn’t that expensive.  There is a speed camera detector for every type of budget and need, and you will likely have to pay a yearly fee for the advanced models.  The upside is that you will always have an updated database of all the publically listed speed cameras.

Legislation regarding speed camera detectors is limited, currently, to legislation that will ban radar jammers but should leave your device legal for years to come.  There are also many citizens who are very concerned with keeping the UK’s laws exactly as they are so regular citizens can have a chance against this endless ticketing. One speed camera in Nottinghamshire issued 76,000 speeding tickets in five years!  You don’t want to be one of those people!

It is clear that speed camera devices are necessary to help you avoid fines and to be your companion as you travel down the UK’s highways. Having this device nearby will keep you safer than you can imagine and is a perfectly legal way to go driving without a sense of worry.

Road Angel - Helping To Keep You Safe

Apr16

An increasing number of devices are coming out that are designed to help people drive safer and help them to maintain compliance of laws, especially when it comes to speed.  To that end, one of the most effective devices is a GPS style system. This system is then attached to a database. The database contains all the latest information in regards to temporary and fixed speed traps, accident black spots and other areas of caution.

A GPS navigation system works by sending a signal out and receiving a signal back from a satellite. This then translates into a position. The road angel is one navigation system that comes with a database. The location registering via the satellite is then compared to the database. Any traps or hazardous areas are then displayed based on your current location and the list of nearby locations from the database.

What the Road Angel allows you to do is to drive with an increased level of safety as well as an increased compliance with traffic laws. The Road Angel is a constant reminder to slow down and obey the various traffic rules and regulations that are within a certain area. This is especially true of an area that has known fixed speed traps. It also alerts you of other hazards such as dangerous turns or areas in the road ahead, which have been known to have an increased risk of accidents.

There are a few things that make the Road Angel one of the best on the market. The first is the extensive database that for a nominal fee is updated regularly to include a variety of temporary hazards. Temporary hazards can include such things as construction areas where speeds have changed or increased danger exists.

They may also include temporary speed traps. It also has a screen, which is easy to read and has multiple ways of warning you when you are approaching a hazard. One of the first ways is by providing a visual display.

This display gives you five lights, which tell you how far you are from the hazard. It also gives off a warning sound, which becomes more frequent the closer you get. This means you do not have to keep your eye on the display to find out if you are near a hazard. The sound alerts you allowing you to keep your attention where it should be, on the road but still allowing you to know when trouble might be just around the bend. This also helps to maintain compliance with the traffic rules and laws.

The Road Angel has one of the most accurate and up to date databases as well as having the latest technology to provide you with the most accurate positioning. While there is, a nominal fee in order to be able to maintain access to the new entries it is well worth the money you will save in avoiding accidents, speeding tickets and other roadway hazards.

UK POLICE CAMERAS

The United Kingdom has been using police speed cameras for almost two decades. The cameras are found on roadside posts and traffic lights.  There are also hand-held and mobile devices that Police Constabularies and local authorities can use. The purpose of these cameras are to help reduce speeding and to help prosecute drivers whom are found to be speeding.  The following are currently some of the more commonly used police cameras.

GATSO METER SPEED CAMERAS
The Gatsometer BV, maker of the Gasto camera, was founded by Maurice Gastonides in 1959 and originates from the Netherlands.  Gastonides was the 1953 winner of the Monte Carlo Rally.   The police camera that bears his name is a camera that uses “type 24″ radar to determine if a driver is speeding.  They can be posted on a stationary pole, in a car or trailer, or on a tripod of a moving vehicle.  The Gatso snaps a flash photo of the back of a vehicle.  It is limited by using standard 35mm film that needs to be replaced and processed often.  It can be calibrated to know the difference between an HGV speed limit and a cars speed limit.

TRUVELO SPEED CAMERAS
Truvelo was founded in 1966 in South Africa and the company continues to grow today. Unlike the Gatso camera, the Truvelo camera system takes photographs, without a flash, of the front of a passing vehicle.  There concern that motorist would be distracted by a flash because the camera uses an infrared flash which is not visible to oncoming traffic.  Recently this technology has become popular because some European countries now require that a driver must be identified to successfully prosecute accused of committing and offence by a police camera.

SPECS POLICE CAMERAS

SPECS cameras name is derived from the name of the manufacturer, Speedcheck Services Limited.  The cameras are sometimes referred to as ?yellow vultures.?  They employ the use of Automatic Number Plate Reading (ANPR) digital technology.  There are at least two cameras that are fitted on gantries over the road.  They use infrared illuminators that allow them to capture information even in the dark.  They are set to obtain information from a set distance apart from one another.  Both cameras record information and then calculate the passing vehicle?s speed by determining how long it took the car to pass each of the cameras? viewpoints.  These are typically used to control and monitor speed limits on dual carriageways and motorways because they can monitor more than one lane at a time. License plate information is captured and stored.

While these are a few of the most popular police cameras used in the UK, there are many other models currently in use as well.  All of the police cameras captures vehicle information instantly but does not notify the driver immediately.  Many debate the effectiveness of the cameras and whether they should continue to be employed.

Gatso Technology, a Safer Road for Everybody

Speed cameras are undoubtedly any driver’s dreadful enemy, in view of the fact that they can effortlessly and accurately pick out your speed, the worse part is, it happens when you expect it the least.  All these are blamed on the Gatso technology.

Gatso, a word derived from the name Gatsonides, a famous rally driver who invented the Gatsometer, is a technology used to measure speed.   At present, Gatso technology is used all over the world not only for road safety and traffic accident precautions, but in sports as well.  Swimming and rally are a few of the sports that use Gatso technology.

Road traffic is on the rise at a volatile rate. From Australia to Europe, from Korea to Kenya, economic developments are spawning escalating weight on road capacity, with an ensuing increase in injuries and deaths and a subsequent focusing on road wellbeing.

In Europe alone, an approximate estimate of 50,000 people is killed annually, in relation to traffic accidents, and an even higher statistics on injuries. Out of the accumulated statistics worldwide, approximately 30% of it is contributed by accidents due to speeding.  As a government’s initiative, using enforcement technology, such as Gatso technology, red light violation cameras or advanced radar systems will have an instantaneous and encouraging effect on dropping the number of road fatalities by at least more than 15 per cent. So it is fitting to utter that road safety enforcement rules is a vital aspect in plummeting road traffic injuries.

Gatso technology was invented with a purpose of contributing measures in safety road traffic.   Although a lot of criticizing, the technology is still being widely used by governments around the world.

Driver’s of all sorts, consider the Gatso technology or the Gatsometer(speed measuring device) as “the enemy”.  Since the Gatsometer was first introduced to the market to monitor speeding vehicles, a far-fetched augmentation of traffic violations was recorded.  This prompted the public to criticize the implementation, patronizing and use of the technology.

Nowadays, more and more individuals and businesses are developing ways to beat the speed-measuring device.  Some driver’s are opting to beat the system with lo-tech methods by simply knowing where the cameras are located, and trying to keep the speed limits when passing through a speed-camera. Some are using global positioning devices (GPS) to identify speed cameras’ locations. An individual even tried to disguise his vehicle just get away with the traffic violation but ended up spending more than 2 months in jail and more than $5k fine.

Surely it is not for the levelheaded to envision that misfortunes will be eradicated overnight with the use of Gatsometers or red light violation cameras. In addition, the restraint of a road user’s behavior based upon the fright of punishment alone may not be enough to decipher the problem.  Understanding in developed countries gives you an idea about minimizing road accidents, steering one’s thoughts to the fact that the actions to encourage behavioral transformation in road occupants is with certainty inclined by the height of enforcement by public authorities.

Mobile Speed Cameras Explained

Mobile speed cameras are used mainly for the purpose of catching drivers that speed.  Police use these cameras inside or outside of their police vehicles.   Speeding is the reason for many crashes so the speed camera can be an effective tool to encourage drivers to slow down.  Mobile speed cameras emit a high frequency beam or radar beam that goes across the road.  Cameras can be operated manually or automatically.  The camera can be set for traffic that is going away or forward.

Before a mobile speed camera is used to catch driver’s speeding, it’s tested by an approved institution according to the Home Office and Department of Transport guidelines.  A speed camera will take a picture that shows information such as speed limit, vehicle speed, time of offense and the date.  The site location number and the film frame number will also be shown.  All this information proves the driver was speeding but needs to be verified before a ticket or notice is given to the driver.  The picture of the driver and the license plate number needs to be clear and match the speeders drivers’ license.

It’s best not to speed but sometimes you may accidentally go over the speed limit.  Speed trap devices such as a Road Angel can be beneficial because they can alert you to mobile camera lasers.  Some Road Angels have a laser sensor unit that can be plugged into the back of it.  Another device is the GPS Speed Warning Device.  It has a system that will warn you when you’re getting near a mobile speed camera.  There are many other speed trap devices on the market that have excellent warning systems.

Speed cameras may reduce car crashes according to some studies.  In some areas speed camera can’t be used unless signs are put up to let drivers know a speed camera is somewhere close or up ahead.  This lets the driver know their coming into a camera range.  A driver may suddenly brake if he’s suddenly surprised by a speed camera which could cause an accident.  Drivers usually slow down when they know a speed camera is close by.

Legal Ways to Avoid Being Caught by Speed Cameras

Introduction to Speed Cameras

There is a lot of commotion regarding the speed cameras that are scattered across the UK and other areas in the Europe. Many are praising these speed cameras as they further enforcing all drivers to strictly follow the speed limits. When people are following the speed limits, the possibilities of accidents are much lower which are why many are in favor of these speed cameras. It also saves a lot of time for traffic enforcers to focus on other things to help ensure safety on the road.

The Problem of Speed Cameras

On the other side, there are people that are not in favor of these cameras due to the heavy penalties that violators need to pay. These speed cameras run in full automation and can accurately track any travelling vehicle using its radar signals. A report can be made along with a picture highlighting all of the details to prove that a vehicle has indeed exceeded the speed limit. While this can pipe down a few reckless drivers, some people that have no intentions of going past the speed limit can suffer as well and it is often due to them being focused on other things or simply forgetting the actual speed limit altogether.

The Illegal Solution

This has encouraged several drivers to devise ways to break to the system on their behalf. Some would go straight to the point and destroy these speed cameras while others would use devices that can block the signals that these speed cameras rely on to determine the speed. Both of these methods are illegal ways to avoid the pitfalls of speed cameras and are not encouraged to be used as they can get you into far more trouble than the simple penalty can bring.

The Legal Solution

Fortunately there is a legal way to go around these systems and at the same time greatly improve your driving experience for safety and comfort. The answer to this problem is getting a GPS speed camera detector for your dashboard.

About GPS Speed Camera Detectors

If you heard of GPS devices, then you probably have an idea on how useful they can be in locating your current position and other places of interest around you. A GPS speed camera detector has the same features and also has special indictors mapping out the location of all the known speed cameras in the vicinity. Like a GPS giving you directions, these devices can alert you to a nearby speed detector and if the model is advanced enough, show the speed limit as well. All of this information is gathered from a database which should be updated to make sure the area is covered. Some of the later models may even detect mobile speed camera detectors as well which many drivers succumb to.

Advantages of GPS Speed Camera Detectors

A basic GPS speed camera detector should be highly affordable to anyone that has paid speeding penalties in the past. It can set you back as little as £70 or you can get models with more features costing up to £300. Remember that you are paying for a device that will save you time and money from now on.  A GPS speed camera detector can conveniently map out all the speed cameras and alert you so that you can slow down accordingly and pass through without problems. As long as you are paying attention to your GPS speed camera detector, you should never have problems exceeding the speed limit by accident ever again and that will save you so much from unnecessary speeding penalties.

Perhaps the best thing that makes GPS speed camera detectors so great are that they are completely legal to use as they do not interfere with main functions of the speed cameras. It also gives the peace of mind to the driver to not worry about them as much and keep their eyes focused on the road which reduces accident rates. The extra navigational features can also help drivers get to their destinations faster while following the speed limits.

GPS speed camera detectors are a must have for any driver who is seriously frustrated about the growing number of speed cameras. This way the roads are a safer place and the drivers can relax with their trusty GPS devices.

Driving to work each morning shouldn’t have to cost more than the gas required to run your car.  If you happen to be cited for speeding your commute could get very expensive very quickly.  If you are well prepared and have a camera detector installed in your car then you can easily avoid the possibility of getting a ticket.

People are always adding accessories to their cars.  Usually we think about adding luxury or entertainment items to a car or even safety features.  While there is certainly nothing wrong with adding a few luxuries to the automobile it will not be complete unless a camera detector is installed.  A camera detector can reduce the chances of receiving an annoying speeding citation if you zoom past a well concealed hidden camera.  Think of how a camera detector would protect your valuable driving record.

Even people that are very cautious drivers will make a mistake every now and then.  It is so easy to accelerate a vehicle gradually without even realizing that you are exceeding the speed limit.  It won’t matter if the speeding was intentional or not, a citation will be issued if a speed camera catches you.  In the old days, before modern technology took over, it was easier to avoid a speeding ticket.  You could usually spot a police officer that was using a radar gun to log your speed.  If you were able to notice in time you could quickly decrease your speed and likely avoid a ticket.  Since speed cameras are being installed everywhere, avoiding a citation has become a little more difficult.

Speed cameras are placed on the roadside and “tripwires” activate a camera that will snap a photograph of a car that speeds through the designated trap.  This photograph holds up very well in court to support the citation that is issued.  Thankfully, camera detectors are able to provide a reliable warning when a speed trap is in the vicinity.  Using a camera detector will save a great deal of money and time.

Keep in mind that most cities and state municipalities depend on traffic citations to generate much needed revenue.  For all intents and purposes, this reduces citations to little more than a means of collecting taxes.  Every municipality will do whatever it takes to set up as many cameras as possible.  With speed cameras popping up everywhere the chances of getting caught speeding are greatly increased.  The odds can be turned around in your favor if you have equipped your vehicle with a reliable camera detector.  You will be warned when speed traps are nearby and can easily avoid being ticketed.  You will save money in the long run because you won’t have to pay those high priced speeding tickets.

The camera detector saves money in other ways too.  Whenever you receive a traffic violation your insurance premiums will be raised unless you attend traffic survival school.  If your premiums are raised you will be paying the higher rate for a number of years.  This could end up costing a great deal of money in the long run.  Using a camera detector is a good step to take to prevent your insurance premiums from skyrocketing.

Using a camera detector will save undue stress as well as time energy and money.  This is a great investment for anyone that wants to avoid any type of hassles that are going to be associated with being caught by a hidden speed camera.  It makes perfect sense to use a camera detector when on the road.

Watch Out for the Gatso Camera!

There are a lot of speed cameras planted all over the UK area and while they are there primarily for safety reasons, they can easily ruin your day if you go faster than usual and immediately get caught in the process which leads you to be forced to pay a pretty heavy fine. You can find these speed detector cameras in just about every busy street and can be fairly obvious to spot. But the one that you really need to watch out for is the Gatso camera.

What it Looks Like

They can be recognized by their big gray box appearance. Some of these cameras can be painted a different color so they can be seen more clearly, but stay alert for any of these big boxes and never take them for granted.

Where it can be Found

Gatso cameras are usually paired with signs that show the speed limit for people to be aware of. They are can be located near bridges or other busy areas where safety is a top priority. They do not rise very high so if you see a box that rises a bit higher than the speed limit sign, chances are that is an active Gatso Camera.

The Capabilities of the Gatso Camera

A Gatso camera is designed to do two things. First it actively uses its radar system to track any vehicles that pass by the road that it covers. It can accurately calculate the speed of any vehicle and then compares it with its assigned speed limit. An inside check is done to see if the speed of the vehicle exceeds the limit. If the speed is greater, the Gatso camera performs its second function which is to take a photograph immediately to capture the violator along with some critical information like the registration plate. This stored photo is used by traffic enforcers to issue fines to speeders and usually cannot be debated on since the Gatso camera is very precise.

Ways to Block the Gatso Camera

There may be a few jamming devices that can block the detection capabilities of the Gatso camera, but they are not legal for usage and are not recommended for drivers to use. Once again, these cameras are placed to enforce safety on the roads.

Ways to Legally get Around the Gatso Camera

Gatso cameras are not supposed to force money out of your wallet. They are there only to make you follow the driving rules and make sure the speed limit is observed. Therefore, all it takes to avoid getting caught by these Gatso cameras is to stay alert with the speed limit signs and slow down when necessary. You don’t even have to be on the lookout for Gatso cameras as they are often found in every street that has speed limits. Just keep an eye on the signs and don’t go recklessly fast regardless of the road conditions.

If that is hard to do due to other distractions in the mind, getting a detection advise helps here. Some detection devices like the Road Angel can be a bit expensive, but they are trusted to give you accurate information on any Gatso cameras in the vicinity using its advanced laser detection system. These devices are usually placed on your dashboard so you can keep track of how fast you are going, the current speed limit, and your surroundings on the road at the same time.

Drivers that prefer a more affordable solution can try the Indic8tor which has just enough potential to detect speed cameras from its stored database. Still, you need to watch out for any mobile Gatso Cameras carried by enforcers as these cannot be detected through GPS. But the Road Angel can effectively display the speed limit so you should have nothing to worry about regarding the speed cameras. In general it is best to regulate your driving speed even if no speed cameras are detected.

These detection devices are a great investment and will always be better than constantly wasting money on undeserved tickets. Always be alert when driving on the road so the Gatso camera will never bother you and buy a detection device if ever you have a hard time.

average speed cameras

Mar20

Average speed cameras are being installed all over the UK to try to force drivers to comply with speed limits within given areas. They are meant to be a deterrent to drivers who have come to realise that police usually don’t prosecute those who drive less than 85 miles an hour on motorways. In addition, these “average speed” cameras can no longer be beat simply by drivers’ ability to slow down when they see the camera.

Unlike other types of cameras, these average speed cameras work in tandem with another camera (in pairs) and cover several miles. A car’s number plate is recorded at the first camera and then at the second; then, the time it takes to cover the distance between the two cameras is recorded and an average speed is calculated in this way.

The Department for Transport is undertaking the significant task of installing average speed cameras in many places where they were not previously, including the 500 miles of motorway where the hard shoulder is going to become a running lane. The speed limit here is going to be reduced to 50 to 60 miles an hour as well. Signs and cameras will be clearly posted.

Are they safe?

Although many road safety groups and motoring organisations broadly support the cameras, critics have said that the cameras themselves are detrimental to safety because drivers “panic brake” once they see the cameras and realise they’re going over the speed limit. This sudden braking can in fact cause rear end collisions. In addition, other drivers may become frustrated by those who are carefully staying within speed limits and may drive too close, also causing potential accidents if sudden stopping should become necessary. Drivers can receive fines for speeds as low as two miles over the speed limit. Finally, some drivers have complained that they’ll need to be paying much more attention to their speedometers than they can potential dangers such as children darting out in front of traffic, for example, which makes driving more dangerous.

Are there ways to beat the cameras?

There can be ways to beat the cameras, depending on how far apart the cameras are placed. First of all, because each pair of cameras is only trained on one lane, changing lanes may thwart them in this way. Additionally, cameras can be placed as much as 10 km apart. It’s conceivable that you could speed up and slow down within that 10 km so that you would be speeding at various times, yet still make an average speed that is within the speed limit.

Are they a good idea?

The cameras have their critics and many people think they pose a danger as discussed above. However, proponents say that as people get used to the cameras, they’ll simply stop speeding and stop trying to “beat” the cameras, which will lead to safer driving and smoother traffic flow overall.

a speed camera

Mar20

It’s very possible that you will see a speed camera along a roadway as you are driving along.  These cameras can be seen cropping up along roadways everywhere and this is creating a lot of controversy.  Many people feel that using a speed camera is not a good idea, but before you make up your mind, you might want to learn a little bit about how they work, why they are used and where they are installed.  It is also interesting to discover what technological advances are in store for the cameras.

The main thing that people should realize is that a speed camera will likely be installed in places that officials have concerns about.  If there is an area that is plagued with a high volume of accidents it is likely that a speed camera will be installed.  This is especially true if the accidents were caused by excessive speed.  Lastly, if there are areas of the road that make it tough for police officers to get to monitor then officials might think about placing a speed camera there as well.  The main goal of a speed camera is to increase the safety of roadways for all motorists that use them.  Speeding can be very dangerous and officials will do anything possible to get people to slow down.

Just how does a speed camera work?  Its basic function is to snap a picture of a vehicle that is speeding.  As a car speeds past one of the cameras, the device quickly checks its speed by sending electromagnetic waves to the passing vehicle.  Once those waves return it can use the data to determine the cars speed.  If the car is travelling faster than what the device has been set to accept it will date a digital image of the car.  Next, the image is encrypted using an internet connection and sent to the central processing center.  The encrypted image is evaluated so the registration information can be retrieved and the infraction is logged.  Officials then do a check in order to determine if the car is a rental or has been reported stolen.  If the vehicle clears the check, then a citation is mailed t the owner.

There are a number of areas that are currently being worked on to further develop the technologies of a speed camera.  Work is being done to develop the cameras ability to measure the distance between two cars.  The purpose of this would be to reduce the tailgating infractions that commonly occur.  Also under development is the technology that will allow cameras to determine if turn signals are being used when necessary.  As the cameras technology is advanced it is likely that more tickets will be issued.  It is likely that the citation process will be very similar to that of speeding citations.
